Mathias Jørgensen Debuts with Denmark Under-21 National Team

Mathias Jorgensen

New York Red Bull’s forward Mathias Jørgensen made his Denmark Under-21 national team debut last weekend when Denmark defeated Slovakia’s U-21 3-1 in Belek, Turkey. The preparation match capped off a training camp held in Turkey between January 7-13.

The camp primarily included players from the Danish SuperLiga, however manager Albert Capellas also decided to use this camp to include new faces like Nikolas Dyhr of FC Midtjylland, Lukas Klitten of Aalborg BK and Jørgensen.

During the camp, Jørgensen was interviewed by the national team’s press team to talk about his experience on playing in MLS and living in the U.S.

“I have developed in many areas that may be difficult to see now, but in a few years it can benefit me a lot. I can see that I am developing a lot, then of course there is that part of life off the field, to be able to manage my time in the big world, and to live in the United States, where mom and dad can't just come every weekend,” Jørgensen said, “I think that has really benefited me a lot. I have developed a lot at a young age.”

In regards to joining Capellas’ team, Jørgensen shared his enthusiasm to see old faces. “To see the other guys has simply been fantastic. I don’t have one-on-one contact with them over there, except on social media. They also have their careers around Europe, so they can’t come over to visit. It is a bit like being home again.”

Denmark’s first 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying match of the new year will be on March 31.
