After scoring the game-winning goal in Saturday’s face-off between the New York Red Bulls and the New England Revolution, Wiki Carmona has been named to MLS Young Players of the Matchday.

Carmona’s goal came in the 85th minute of the match, giving the Red Bulls the lead again after New England equalized in the 76th minute. The goal was Carmona’s first of the season and second of his MLS career, and the 2-1 score stood to give New York three points.

Being named to the list, Carmona is recognized as one of just five under-22 players in the MLS who stood out on Matchday 24.

Carmona came off the bench as a substitute for forward Dante Vanzeir, and the 20-year-old midfielder made the difference in Saturday’s match.

“Everyone wants to start but it's also a huge responsibility to come on and keep at the same pace that everyone has been going at,” Carmona said.

This season, Carmona appeared in 12 games for New York and started five. In that time, he recorded five key passes and has been an effective piece of the Red Bulls’ midfield.

New York acquired Carmona ahead of the 2021 season, and since then the Guarico, Venezuela native has been someone the Red Bulls are able to call on to meet important moments.

After scoring the deciding goal in one of New York’s biggest home matches of the season, Carmona said “It's such a unique feeling to do this ... I hope to repeat it again.”
