HARRISON, N.J. (June 13, 2024) – Red Bulls Academy U-13 and U-14 teams set to host 2nd annual Metro Cup at Red Bulls Training Facility on June 14 and 15.
The competition will consist of a round robin style tournament between the U-13 and U-14 age groups of New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, CF Montreal, and NYCFC. Games will consist of two 30-minute halves. Each team will play each other once, then the top two teams after the round robin will compete in a championship match.
“This event is a great way for us to end the season on the correct note with best-versus-best, winner-takes-all tournament play against other MLS opposition from the northeast.” Say Academy Manager Grant Findlay, “Last year, we hosted NYCFC and Philadelphia Union – and for this year, we have added CF Montreal to the equation. Like the First Team, our players will empty the tank until the final whistle of the final game.”
The U-13s will open play against NYCFC at 8:30 a.m. ET on June 14. Right after, they’ll play Philadelphia Union at 11:30 a.m. ET. Then will round off group play against CF Montreal at 8:30 a.m. ET on June 15.
“I’m very excited to showcase the growth of the 2012 team over the year. This is a great benchmarking event that allows us to level ourselves against top MLS competition as we close out the U13 age group.” Says U-13 Head Coach Juan BijKebbe, “More importantly, it’s an opportunity to highlight the lessons the boys have learned in their first full year of playing 11v11. We’re looking forward to the challenge and the chance to see how far we’ve come. I thank the New York Red Bull Academy Leadership for organizing this event for us.”
The U-14s will look to defend their 2024 Metro Cup title. They will start off with a matchup against NYCFC at 10:00 a.m. ET on June 14. After, they will battle Philadelphia Union at 1:00 p.m. ET. Finally, they will play CF Montreal on June 15 at 10:00 a.m. ET.
“We are looking forward to hosting another end-of-season event with strong MLS academy competition.” Says U-14 Head Coach London Woodberry. “It’s a great chance to see how much progress we’ve made as a team, but more importantly, it gives each player a moment to show where they are in their development. Our aim is to help guide them toward becoming professionals—not just through their skills, but through their mindset and daily habits. This weekend will be another great step in that journey, and I expect it to be a top event. “
