THE OTHER SIDE: What You Need to Know About D.C. United

How They’re Doing

D.C. United is holding on to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference while multiple teams, including the Red Bulls, try to snatch it away late in the season.

Their season has hit a rough patch lately, though, with only one win in their last eight matches.

Their last three matches have all ended in draws.

While the season can be seen by many as a success already, coming from being the worst team in the league to a playoff contender, the job isn’t finished yet.

For a club that has so much success in its history, they have yet to make the playoffs since 2019. Three points against the Red Bulls on Saturday would go a long way towards securing that spot in the 2023 postseason.

Head-to-Head History

New York has played D.C. more than they have any other club in its history. It is the most historic and most played rivalry in the league’s history.

Since the two clubs first match against each other in 1996, there have been 105 total matches between the Atlantic rivals across all competitions.

This will be the third meeting in 2023 in all competitions, with the first two both being 1-0 in favor of the Red Bulls.

An Omir Fernandez goal was the difference in a 1-0 victory in the U.S. Open Cup, while a John Tolkin free kick snatched three points for New York in the first league meeting of the season.

Player to Watch: Forward Christian Benteke

D.C. United forward Christian Benteke leads the team with ten goals in 28 regular season appearances.

Six of those goals have come at Audi Field.

Benteke’s big presence up front will likely create a challenge for the Red Bulls’ backline on Saturday at Audi Field.
