The New York Red Bulls secured a point on the road in the second match of Leagues Cup play, drawing 1-1 with CF Monterrey.
Rayados went on to take an extra point, winning the penalty shootout.
Julian Hall scored for New York, finishing off a sublime through ball from Daniel Edelman, early in the first half.
Hall scored his first goal of the season and his third of his career across all competitions. This was his first career Leagues Cup goal. The Manhattan, N.Y. native became the sixth homegrown in Red Bulls history to score a goal in an international competition.
"Overall, I thought it was a great performance from the team," Hall said. "You know, we came up short in the end on 'pens,' but I think, overall, we showed that we're a good team and we can compete in a tournament like Leagues Cup."
Hall became the youngest goal scorer for New York in an international competition at 17 years, 132 days old.
"In my opinion, we played a really good game in our performance with our young guys," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "We were very active, very intense. That was good."
Monterrey battled back to score before halftime.
RBNY hit the post twice in the match, with Dennis Gjengaar and Mohammed Sofo both ringing shots off the post.
"Really, really good performance," Schwarz said. "PK, okay, was unlucky in this moment, but from the performance side, I'm really, really satisfied with the guys, how they played, and how they defend all together. And of course, the first goal we conceded we have to defend better, to be active defend the cross more, and then to be active in our box defending. We have also to respect the quality of the opponent, but the performance was really good."
Carlos Coronel made some big saves in the match, none bigger than a game-saver in the 80th minute, a kick-save on a point-blank header.
Edelman tallied his second assist of the season across all competitions and the sixth of his career. The Warren, N.J. native became the fourth homegrown in franchise history to tally an assist in an international competition.
Nehuen Benedetti made his Leagues Cup debut and also his first appearance for the first team.
New York return for the final match of Phase One of Leagues Cup standing on four points and a +1 goal differential and everything to play for.
The top four clubs from the MLS table advance to the Knockout Rounds and will be placed in a fixed bracket to compete in the single-game elimination matches beginning with the Quarterfinals (four matches).
