MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Bringing Point Back from San Jose

Match Recap 16x9 1

The New York Red Bulls and San Jose Earthquakes battled to a 1-1 draw at PayPal Park and RBNY will be bringing a point back from their road trip to the other coast.

Emil Forsberg scored New York's goal, coming in the 19th minute, when Peter Stroud found the team captain with a through ball to the penalty spot. Forsberg made some deft moves around defenders, keeping the ball at his feet, before smashing a shot to the roof of the goal for the opener.

San Jose drew the game even in the second half, when a deflected ball off Mohammed Sofo found enough space to slip past Carlos Coronel.

"Performance was good today," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "Beginning was really good from our team, and then we scored a great goal. Great situation when we pass forward. Really good movement. Then from Emil (Forsberg) and with his quality.

"After that, we lost a little bit the control of the game. We stayed in some moments a little bit too deep at this then also the quality of San Jose with these offensive players and with the wing backs on the side," Schwarz said. "Second half we conceded one goal after a long ball. ... One point on the road. That's okay, especially here in San Jose, which is very difficult."

Forsberg scored his seventh MLS goal of the season and the 16th of his MLS career.

Forsberg has tallied a goal in back-to-back matches and now has six goal contributions in four matches against Western Conference opponents this season.

New York played up a man for the final stretch of the game following a second yellow card issued to DeJuan Jones.

Raheem Edwards was issued a red card while warming up on the sidelines and will miss New York's next MLS match.

Forsberg is now tied for fifth place in franchise history with Sacha Kljestan, Mike Grella, and Eddie Gaven for most MLS goals scored by a midfielder with 16.

Kyle Duncan, who dished the ball to Stroud before Forsberg's goal, has tallied his fourth MLS assist of the season and the 20th of his MLS career. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native has tallied three assists in his last two MLS appearances.

Stroud recorded his third MLS assist of the season and his first since March 29 against New England Revolution.

Sean Nealis made his 176th career appearance for New York across all competitions, which ranks second place in franchise history for appearances by a defender passing Aaron Long.

The Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to six matches against San Jose.

"We take this point on the road and now to keep the focus for Philly on Wednesday in our U.S. Open Cup game," Schwarz said.

New York will next face off against the Philadelphia Union in the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals on Wednesday, July 9 at Subaru Park.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET with coverage on Paramount+, CBS Sports Network, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
