Emil Forsberg became the first player to score against Charlotte FC in the month of May, bagging two goals in a span of three minutes, as the Red Bulls topped CLTFC, 3-1, on Wednesday night.
Forsberg scored a free kick goal from 20 yards out, the first goal Charlotte has allowed all month. Moments later, following a heads up play from Lewis Morgan, Forsberg had a brace.
"I've been waiting for that free-kick goal," Forsberg said. "I had some bad luck in some games so finally got in. An amazing feeling, of course. Then second goal, yeah, I just needed to put it in. Amazing work from Lewis seeing me. It's a good feeling to score but that goal is a great path from Lewis so I could just put in."
Forsberg scored his first-career multi-goal MLS match and now has four career goals at Red Bull Arena. His six goals this season, ranks tied for seventh in MLS for goals by a midfielder. Forsberg has now tallied five goal contributions in his last five MLS matches.
Andrés Reyes scored off a corner kick delivered by John Tolkin, collecting a ball and lunging through a shot that found the back of the net.
Reyes scored his first MLS goal of the season and the fifth of his MLS career.
Tolkin recorded his first assist of the season and the 12th MLS assist of his career. He has now tallied 16 career assists across all competitions, which is now the most by a defender in franchise history across all competitions.
Morgan tallied his fourth assist of the season and the 20th of his MLS career. The midfielder has 14 goal contributions this season and has recorded four goal contributions in his last four matches. Morgan has a goal contribution in five of the six matches at Red Bull Arena this season. The Scottish winger has a goal or an assist in three-straight matches at Red Bull Arena.
Charlotte scored late in stoppage time to erase the clean sheet for New York.
"I'm very happy we have this reaction after not the best performance in the first half, that we can change our intensity, and our energy immediately and then to change how we want to play, especially in the second half," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "This is also good to know because it's not possible to play every week a perfect match, a perfect game. So it's good to see that we can change and that we have to keep our focus on how we want to play, this was good, and this is why I'm happy today that we changed the second half to the first half."
The Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak at home to nine matches across all competitions, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in franchise history. This is the longest home unbeaten streak across all competitions, since 2018-2019, which extended from August 5, 2018 to February 27, 2019.
New York becomes only the second team in franchise history to go unbeaten in their first six home matches to open up a season (2012).
New York remains at Red Bull Arena to face off against Orlando City SC on Saturday, June 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish and New York Red Bulls Radio in English via TuneIn, the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
