Beginning their Leagues Cup bid, the New York Red Bulls defeated the New England Revolution in a penalty shootout 4-2 after a 0-0 draw at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

After a 90-minute end-to-end battle, in which neither side was able to find the back of the net, goalkeeper Carlos Coronel denied New England’s Giacomo Vrioni to put the Red Bulls ahead.

John Tolkin buried it from the spot to finalize the 4-2 score and give New York two of the three points on the line.

New York’s Dante Vanzeir, Daniel Edelman and Sean Nealis also scored for the Red Bulls.

Although both sides came up scoreless at the end of regulation time, the match was intensely fought, with New York and New England splitting possession 48.3 to 51.7 percent.

New York gained many chances throughout the match, outshooting the Revolution 11 to seven. Still, the Red Bulls were unable to get past New England goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, forcing the match into a shootout.

With the win, New York rises to the top of group East 4 with two points, followed by New England with one, and Atlético de San Luis with zero, as they are yet to play as of Saturday night.

New York will settle the group standings on Sunday, July 30 as they take on Atlético de San Luis at Red Bull Arena. The top two teams in the group will advance to the round of 32. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV and New York Red Bulls Radio in English via TuneIn, NewYorkRedBulls.com, and New York Red Bulls app.
