Kaku Notches Assist in First MLS Start

First Major League Soccer start, first Major League Soccer assist for Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra.

Kaku assisted 17-year-old Ben Mines to open scoring for the Red Bulls as they felled the Portland Timbers 4-0 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

“I’m very happy and the team had a great game,” Kaku said through a translator following the game.

Kaku continues to mix in with the team and his teammates, which has helped him on the pitch and off, according to Head Coach Jesse Marsch.

“Everyone here knows that Kaku is a great player,” Marsch said. “The best part for me is that every day he's trying to figure out how to fit into our system, how to now understand what we do a little bit clearer, and then like for me, this game versus the second Olimpia game, he looks like more of a Red Bull player. He fits into the tactics more.”

Kaku started and played 64 minutes for the Red Bulls, coming off for Tyler Adams on Saturday night.

“Little by little, I’m adapting to Jesse’s system, what we want on the field and with my teammates,” Kaku said.

The future is bright for Kaku, the club’s first Young Designated Player.

“We're only three weeks into our time with him and we know that it's only going to get bigger and bigger and better and better,” Marsch said.
