Jesse Marsch Praises Play of Teenager Tyler Adams

New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams notched his second MLS start of his career on Saturday. The 18-year-old played all 90 minutes in New York’s scoreless draw against Real Salt Lake.

Head Coach Jesse Marsch said Adams’ play was “very good.”

“Tyler is tenacious in there. He's aggressive. He's confident on the ball,” Marsch said. “The thing that he's still developing is the savviness and sense of how to move around with the game and set plays up in front of him. I thought, overall, that he was pretty good tonight.”

Adams recently returned to the Red Bulls after helping the U.S. U-20 National Team to a CONCACAF U-20 Championship and berth to the U-20 World Cup. He will likely be a part of the U-20 World Cup team when they head to South Korea in May and June of this year.

“He wins his duels. He's fast in there, he covers ground, he pressures well, he breaks up plays, and he's a competitor,” Marsch said.

Adams is the first player to graduate the Red Bulls Regional Development School (RDS) program and progress all the way through the academy system to a professional contract.

“I could go on because we think so highly of him,” the head coach said. “We know that it's only a matter of him getting repetition for him to continue to elevate his status within the team and continue to develop as a player.
