How The New York Red Bulls Reached the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Semifinals

SCCL2018 How We Got Here

The New York Red Bulls head to Mexico for the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Semifinals against Club Deportivo Guadalajara on April 4 at 10 p.m. ET.

Here’s how New York reached the semifinal:

Qualifying for the 2017-2018 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League began in 2016, as the Red Bulls went on to win the MLS Eastern Conference that year, earning a berth to this edition of the Champions League in the process.

New York opened Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League account with a game in Costa Rica Club Deportivo Olimpia of Hondura, who qualified after winning the 2017 Concacaf League.

The Red Bulls were first to strike, with a first-half glanced header from midfielder Daniel Royer, assisted by Bradley Wright-Phillips. CD Olimpia was awarded a penalty later in the game, earning a 1-1 draw in Leg 1. At Red Bull Arena for the Leg 2, New York won, 2-0, with goals from Wright-Phillips and Sean Davis.

In their second ever Champions League Quarterfinal, New York drew Club Tijuana, who qualified for the tournament with the best regular-season record in 2017 Liga MX Clausura.

Goalkeeper Luis Robles posted a career-high 13-saves to keep a clean sheet, while BWP once again delivering all-important away-goals to give a 2-0 result in Mexico. New York became the first MLS team to ever score two goals on Mexican ground and just the third team in MLS history to win in Mexico in 49 games (3-38-8).

One week later, at Red Bull Arena, the Red Bulls punched their ticket to the Semifinals with a 3-1 victory at home. Tyler Adams, Marc Rzatkowski and Alejandro "Kaku" Romero Gamarra all found the back of the net to give the Red Bulls a 3-1 victory.

New York will take on Club Deportivo Guadalajara on April 4, in Mexico, and April 10, at Red Bull Arena.
