THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT: Breaking down the pyramid -

The New York Red Bulls are committed to developing and improving the level of youth soccer in the tri-state area. From an early age, the Red Bulls offer coaching and instruction to youth players of all skill levels. Whether that means providing a fun, safe environment to play the beautiful game, to developing the next Homegrown MLS star, the Red Bulls’ multi-layered youth program offers something for everyone.

In The Future is Bright series, NewYorkRedBulls.com takes a closer look at the organization’s youth development platform.

The Red Bulls Player Development Pyramid is a program that offers elite soccer training from professional coaches, and opportunities for youth players of all ages and abilities in the tri-state. The goal of the program is to provide training and education to players, coaches, parents, and soccer organizations throughout the community.

At the base of the six-tier pyramid structure are the Red Bulls Training Camps. There are different camps designed to provide training for youth athletes of all ages and abilities. The training camps offer a unique experience where players can reside on-site and spend three to six hours a day training and learning new skills. The camps focus on the introduction and mastery of skills. This is done through ball contact, skills challenges and homework assignments from professional Red Bulls coaches. The Red Bulls also offer team, youth, high school camps in the tri state, as well as camps for coaches.

The Regional Development School (RDS) is offered to both boys and girls ages 7-14 and is intended for elite travel level soccer players. The camps serve as the pre-academy feeder system and offer athletes opportunities to play soccer at a higher level. The program is offered year around and offers advanced curriculum to teach technical aspects of the game.

The New York Red Bulls Academy is a cost-free program that aspires to help develop the best talent in the Tri-State Area. Academy teams train three or more times a week and play in two matches under the supervision of professional staff. The academy is comprised of five teams (U-12, U-13, U-14, U-16, U-18). The primary goal of the Academy is assisting talented players in reaching the highest levels soccer.

The U-23 team competes in the Premier Development League (PDL), which is comprised of 65 teams competing in four conferences.  The season takes place during the summer months between May and August. Teams are comprised of Red Bulls academy products and select college players looking to continue elite training during their collegiate off-season. It is considered the top-level men’s amateur soccer league in the country.

The New York Red Bulls II is in its second season and competes in the United Soccer League (USL). The team bridges the gap between the academy teams and the Red Bulls first team. It offers young first team players an opportunity to get competitive minutes regularly and further their development. Through its first full season, the team has also provided an opportunity for current Red Bulls academy players to train and play in a professional environment.
