Formation Always in Flux, But Jelling, As New Players Integrate

Without showing their full hand, the New York Red Bulls are working their starters into form ahead of the CONCACAF Champions League and the 2018 MLS season.

Marc Rzatkowski and Tyler Adams started in the midfield, with Felipe home for the birth of his child. Head Coach Jesse Marsch had high marks for the midfield pairing.

"I thought [it was] pretty darn good," Marsch said. "I thought that they were able to create a lot of turnovers through pressing and counter-pressing, and then were able to take some of those and turn them into advantages."

Bradley Wright-Phillips said they worked hard in the first half -- including netting the team's lone goal -- but things started clicking more in the second half.

"We had a talk at halftime and I think we had a little more understanding," Wright-Phillips said. "It just shows with the players we’ve got, and the kind of formations we can play with the players, and it showed tonight."

Marsch said the team still has room to improve.

"We weren’t quite sharp enough on our advantages but again that’s normal this time of year, and I think it wound up being, at times, an up and down game because we were able to create those turnovers and get out on the run," Marsch said.
